Dear Friend,
Recently, a New Jersey cancer survivor tried to ask Chris Christie about his plan to allow insurance companies to drop coverage for critical procedures like mammograms.
His response? He told her the cancer she got in her 20’s was “an exception.”
You can watch their exchange here.
I don’t know how Chris Christie can look a cancer survior in the eye, tell her that her illiness was an “exception,” and dismiss the question about her daughter’s health care, but that’s exactly what he did.
It’s even more outrageous in light of the countless stories we’re hearing right now of health insurance companies denying coverage to their patients.
You probably aren’t surprised to hear that before the state forced insurance companies to cover mammograms for women, they chose not to. But now, like nearly every other state, New Jersey mandates coverage for these life-saving procedures.
Dispite his claims to the contrary, no matter how hard he tries to spin his position, the fact remains that Chris Christie’s plan would reverse that progress and let insurance companies drop mammogram coverage.
Though Christie’s TV ad calls that claim “deceitful,” Star Ledger columnist Tom Moran wrote yesterday that it “happens to be true” and that Christie’s solution “would allow any insurer to sidestep mandates, including the one requiring mammogram coverage for young women who have a family history of cancer.”
So while Christie says he would never deny a woman the right to a mammogram, he doesn’t even understand the consequences of his own policies, which is why he is wrong on what matters most to New Jersey families.
Jon Corzine will continue to fight to make sure nobody is denied the health care they need, and he understands that if you allow insurance companies to drop coverage for mammograms, they will.
If you agree that we should never let that happen, then please, share this email with five of your friends today.
Thank you,
Maggie Moran
