Corzine, Booker run for breast cancer awareness charity in Newark
Gov. Jon Corzine and Newark Mayor Cory Booker set off on a politically charged 5K run around Newark this morning to raise awareness for breast cancer.
“This is a chance to have a little political spectacle for something that’s really a worthy cause,” Booker said after the 8 a.m. jog that started and ended in Military Park.

N.J. eighth graders show math gains
New Jersey was among 15 states whose eighth graders have shown significant improvement in math since 2007, according to the results of national assessment tests released yesterday.
The state’s eighth-grade score rose four points to 293 on the math National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), one of a series of federally funded achievement tests often tagged “The Nation’s Report Card.” Pennsylvania’s average eighth-grade math score increased two points to 288, not considered a statistically significant change.

Jersey City to gain 1,600 finance jobs
Flanked by local officials, Gov. Jon Corzine announced today that the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, which has been based on Water Street in Manhattan, is moving 1,600 employees to the Newport section of Jersey City.
The state put together an incentive package worth $85 million to lure the jobs to Jersey City, officials said.

The Democrat’s record shows a capacity to go against the state’s traditional politics and improve its government. Given that record and the weak alternatives, The Inquirer endorses JON CORZINE.
As such, his administration’s victories have been qualified, its progress halting. On finances, the governor took a principled stand for funding pension obligations, only to have to retreat from it amid the downturn. He budgeted cautiously, but then made exceptions under political and economic pressure. He put forward but abandoned a controversial proposal to retire state debt. He won important concessions from state-employee unions, but often seemed too cozy with labor.
Corzine has taken some of the sternest steps in memory to push school and municipal consolidation, while capping property levies. But he has managed only to significantly slow the growth of property taxes, not reduce them.
For Governor of New Jersey
It is far easier to come up with campaign themes than slog through the real-world quagmire of New Jersey politics, as Mr. Corzine has done.
He is a better choice for New Jersey voters than either of his challengers. He has earned another four years to deal with the state’s budget problems and culture of corruption.
But Jon Corzine, who is slightly ahead among likely voters, is a decent man with a laudable set of goals for his state. We endorse him for re-election in New Jersey on Nov. 3.

Steelworkers Endorse Governor Corzine’s Bid for Re-Election
Citing Governor Corzine’s commitment to keeping high-paying manufacturing jobs in the state and training workers at New Jersey’s chemical facilities, the United Steelworkers Union today endorsed the Governor’s re-election efforts.
“The members of the Steelworkers’ union are key components to New Jersey’s economy and growth,” Governor Corzine said. “More importantly, they have worked tirelessly to keep good, high-paying manufacturing jobs in New Jersey while ensuring access to quality health care and fair wages for their members. These are the very same values I have fought for my entire life and I am proud to have them stand by my side as we continue to move New Jersey forward.”
Planned Parenthood national president endorses Corzine
Cecile Richards, the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, today endorsed Gov. Jon Corzine for re-election. Corzine also has the backing of the Planned Parenthood Action Committee of New Jersey.
“Gov. Corzine and Chris Christie’s record on women’s health are complete polar opposites,” said Richards, whose mother, former Texas Gov. Ann Richards was defeated for re-election by Republican George W. Bush. “Gov. Corzine is a strong and passionate advocate for women’s health and women’s rights. Chris Christie would move New Jersey backward on women’s health.”
Women’s caucus recommends Corzine for re-election
The Women’s Political Caucus recommended Gov. Jon Corzine’s re-election today, although it praised both major party gubenatorial candidates for selecting women as their running mates.
